Our Story

In July 2016 we purchased our home and property just south of Madoc, ON as a young married couple with our 5 month-old son. When we purchased the home we were unsure how exactly we were going to use the property but one thing we did know was that it had a tremendous amount of potential.

We first built a workshop (later to become a dedicated sugarshack) and began exploring the property. We decided to have the acreage designated as 'managed forest' through the Ministry of Natural Resources. This is an incentive program aimed at land owners who intend to care for and develop privately-owned woodland and become stewards of the land. It was during this initial consultation with our forestry planner that the “Maple Bug” was planted into our heads on a forest walkthrough. Needless to say the rest is history!

The first year we tapped 150 trees using buckets and boiling on a 2x4 evaporator in the woodshed. The next three years we expanded the sugarbush into the commercial operation it is today with 1600+ taps on high-vacuum, using a mix of modern and traditional methods from our mineral rich limestone soil and within our 1500sq ft sugarshack and store. Every single container is packaged and labelled by hand here at the farm to enable us to vouch for its authenticity.

During those three years we had a second son. We began beekeeping and now maintain close to 50 bee colonies. In 2019 we had the opportunity to purchase the adjacent vacant property to complete our 80+ acre part-time farm. We have a wonderful mix of additional hardwood and cedar trees that complement our maple sugarbush. We have two roadside fields that are the home to our apiary and will serve as a future location to our custom sawmill business and small artisanal crops.

We are excited to share our part-time farm homestead with our supporters!
